Moving I`iwi (Vestiaria coccinea) as a Surrogate for Future Translocations of Endangered `Akohekohe (Palmeria dolei)
Translocations often play an important role in the recovery of endangered species. To
assess feasibility for translocation of endangered `Akohekohe (Palmeria dolei), we
conducted an experimental translocation of I`iwi (Vestiaria coccinea) from east to west
Maui. Mist-netting, veterinary screening of candidate birds, and helicopter transport of
healthy I`iwi were successful, resulting in no injuries or mortalities. Translocated birds
were assigned to two types of release. Hard release birds were radio tagged and released
on the day of translocation. In contrast, soft release birds were held in large cages for 7
days and fed artificial nectar. During holding soft release I`iwi feeding rates, fecal
production, and mass were monitored. Soft release birds suffered 33% mortality during
the holding period. At the end of the holding period, soft release survivors were outfitted
with a radio transmitter and released. All translocated I`iwi were followed by radio
telemetry for an average of 21 days. Once released, soft release birds showed higher
rates of movement, possibly reflecting conflict with established hard released I`iwi. Our
results suggest that translocation efforts for wild `Akohekohe will be successful if hard
release protocols are followed
A Study Of Twenty-Nine Home Demonstration Clubs In Lee County, Arkansas
Home demonstration work is an essential part of the educational program of the Cooperative Extension Service in Agriculture and Home Economics of the Smith-Lever Act of May 8, 1914. The act gave authority for the United States Department of Agriculture and State Land-Grant Colleges to join forces in establishing and maintaining an out-of-school educational program. The main purpose of the program is to aid men, women, and youth in applying research results and other accepted practices in improving their farm homes and communities.
The basic philosophy of the program has been to help people help themselves. The home demonstration agent works with all farm families and community leaders, also with urban families in helping them to analyze family living and to develop programs that will aid them in making any desired changes

New Trends in Global Outsourcing of Commercial Surrogacy: A Call for Regulation
In a time where advancement of reproductive technologies evolve in a rapid pace beyond the ability of the government to anticipate public social costs associated with it; this Note seeks to address the legal, policy and ethical challenges surrounding commercial surrogacy - particularly from a global context. First, this Note explores India\u27s role in commercial surrogacy, as a case study, to understand the growing global demand for surrogacy arrangements in countries that do not regulate commercial surrogacy. Second, this Note reviews comparatively the weaknesses in existing commercial surrogacy laws among some of the European Union states and the United States. Third, this Note identifies Israel as a successful model for regulating commercial surrogacy, through its commitment to providing sufficient resources, to enforce the laws, and to protect its citizens without compromising individual autonomy. Finally, this Note calls for more effective regulation of commercial surrogacy on a global scale - through leadership and coordination
Probing Students’ Self-Efficacy, Creativity and Performance in Biology through Metacognitive Blogging
The purpose of this study was to investigate, in two different fourth year high school biology classes,
the impact that using a metacognitive blogging teaching approach had on students' overall
performance in the subject of biology, as well as their sense of self-efficacy and their creative
potential. The research design that was utilized was a two-group, pretest-posttest quasi-experimental
design. Both metacognitive and traditional teaching strategies were utilized during the course of the
study. The purpose of the path analysis was to determine how the various teaching strategies
impacted the students' sense of self-efficacy, creativity, and overall performance in Biology.
According to the findings of the research, the teaching method has the most significant impact on
biology performance, while self-efficacy also has a significant impact on biology performance. The
study also found that creativity has a significant connection to the teaching method, but that
creativity only has an indirect impact on biology performance. The relationship between creative
ability and self-efficacy is not particularly strong. According to the results of the research, using a
metacognitive blogging teaching style is a successful method for boosting students' performance in
Biology as well as their creative output. As a consequence of conducting a route analysis, the
emergent framework for teaching biology through the use of metacognitive blogging reveals these
links. For the purpose of improving learners' metacognition, it could be beneficial to conduct
additional research on the usage of blogs as a metacognitive tool. In addition, researchers might look
at other factors that, if improved, might result in higher levels of self-efficacy, creativity, and
academic performance among students studying Biology
Optimizing Inhaler Technique
Studies show that correct patient technique using inhalers is correlated to the number of times they are taught and reminded by a health care professional. As a step toward addressing this problem, I propose increasing inhaler use teaching, utilizing EMR tools as well as online modules, and increasing the comfort of providers with teaching inhaler use. This may be achieved through the use of PRISM dot phrases titled .INHALERNAME, accessing teaching videos during a patient visit, and having patients demonstrate technique at each visit.https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/fmclerk/1371/thumbnail.jp
Finding the Center of Mass of a Soft Spring
This article shows how to use calculus to find the center of mass position of
a soft cylindrical helical spring that is suspended vertically. The spring is
non-uniformly stretched by the action of gravity. A general expression for the
vertical position of the center of mass is obtained.Comment: LaTeX, 7 pages, 2 figures. Minor changes to agree with published

Perpetration experience and gender predicting empathy with a stranger or acquaintance rapist
This study examined empathy with a hypothetical rapist based on experimentally varied type of rape (stranger; acquaintance), participant perpetration experience, and gender. Undergraduate students (115 male, 206 female) completed the Rape Perpetrator Empathy-During Subscale and Sexual Experiences Survey. Hypotheses were partially supported. Sexual perpetrators (of acquaintances) reported greater empathy than nonperpetrators, and men reported greater empathy than women. Type of rape was not significant. Findings support past research, but more data from rapists is needed
Adolescent Pregnancy and Sexually Transmitted Diseases: Case Report
More than 1 million teenagers become pregnant every year in the United States. Nearly one-half of the pregnancies are carried to term, while a similar number end in abortion. In Michigan this amounts to approximately 34,000 teenage pregnancies (ages 15 to 19). These adolescent patients have a high incidence of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Of the pregnant teens at Henry Ford Hospital. 60% present with one or more STDs. We discuss the case of a 13-year-old pregnant girl who presented at five weeks estimated gestation with gonorrhea, chlamydia, and appendiceal perforation, resulting in subsequent spontaneous abortion. Further discussion focuses on common STDs in pregnant adolescents
